Wanting to get to the bottom of it all he seeks out and confronts local men with that name, men who happen to have connections to Carmen, to Sophia and to a close friend of Lucy's, model Danielle Barlow. While Michael is upsetting all around him, events take a disturbing turn with the attempted murder of Sophia. Under police investigation and assailed by both an associate of Sophia's husband and by a traumatised ex-soldier friend of Lucy, Michael finds a connection to the mystery with his wife's new hobby of genealogy, which has filled their study with census returns and certificates. A 19th Century female ancestor of Lucy's in Lincolnshire committed suicide because of her husband's infidelity. Selfishly Michael feels relieved and refreshed to face his troubles. He even looks into his own family history and takes his own road trip with Carmen and his son Adam. But there is another Henry Allbones further back in Lucy's family history with a far less appealing outcome for the philandering husband.
